Film 9 - 'Avatar' No. 26 IMDB top 100

It's number 47 on the latest IMDB list now. It should be number 1. (So far)

I cannot describe how awesome this film is. My writing ain't not good enough.
Watching the film, I felt sort of the same as when I saw Star Wars the first time. And like Jurassic Park and Lord of the Rings it employs a new generation of special effects.

The story is a pretty obvious one but that kind of works as well. You could say it's based on other popular films but bringing all the good bits from other films into one, actually makes an excellent, original film. They all just seem to work and fit together.

There are parts from Aliens, Apocalypse Now, Dances with Wolves, Lord of the Rings and even Titanic. But then it's also all the old Sci-Fi novels you may of read as a youngster. There are 10 foot tall blue aliens, animals and plants that want you dead. Gung ho Marines and then the paralyzed cripple who just wants to walk again. *sobs*

What's not to like!?? I'll tell you.

Unobtainium... That's what. Why? With a $237million budget surely they could've come up with a better name that unobFUCKINGtainium..no?

anyway i'll give it a 9/10. It should've been a 10/10.

Film 8 - 'Up' No. 70 IMDB top 100

I can only apologise... and already people are moaning about my lack of blogging which is surprising! And somewhat worrying.. anyway let's talk about 'Up'.

Actually let's not. The only reason worth watching this film is in the short YouTube clip shown above.
And it's the character of Dug gives this film a rating of 6/10. All on his own.
I don't care how many awards this film is up for. I don't care about the 'Beautifully, sad story'. It's about Dug. And the squirrels.

There, I said it.

Film 7 - The Green Mile No. 96 IMDB top 100

'Walkin' the mile'... in fact you could probably walk 12 miles in the time it takes to watch all 189 minutes of it! But then again the time flys by.

As a film based on the Stephen King novel it's pretty close to the original written story. The characters are as you might imagine them and the setting just how you would picture it.
Apart from the bloody mouse. That bloody fucking rubbish cunting mouse. Why the flying fuck is the mouse even in it?

anyway, I digress.... THE MOUSE IS AN IMPORTANT METAPHOR FOR SOMETHING.

FUCK OFF.

anyway, apart from the mouse it's quite an enjoyable film.

Film 6 - Forrest Gump No.39 IMDB Top 100

I've not been lax in the film watching, just the blogging.
I have an excuse, I've been in Spain. And I'm not willing to pay an extortionate fee to go online and blog for my paltry 4 readers. (That I know of anyway)

So I have a bit of blogging to do before i can catch up with myself....

I think I saw Forrest Gump about 2 weeks ago, so it's not too fresh in my memory. It does still stand out in my mind however. What a brilliant film.
I love the simplicity of it all. The story is such a sad one.
But as they say. 'Stupid is, as stupid does'. I still love it.

Film 5 - Aliens. No.54 IMDB Top 100

I've never seen Alien. It's a horror film in my opinion, and I don't like them.
Aliens 2 however isn't a horror. It's sci-fi war-fest. It's just a bughunt. It's BRILLIANT!

Or it was until I watched it again after many years of viewing more important things. TV programmes like Battlestar and Stargate. etc.

I'm afraid that Aliens has lost it's brilliance for me. With so much use of CGI in modern films and TV, I'm afraid the monsters, vehicles and scale models of the terraforming plant are just that, models. Parts of it reminded me of Thunderbirds.
Which isn't a good thing.

It's still an exciting story. The characters are engaging and the interaction between them great. The Marines are funny, macho and and even scared. I'll admit that the whole narrative between Ripley and Newt was utter bollocks to my senses. Who gives a shit? Newt is dead before the 3rd film even begins. Good thing too. The 3rd film is utter shite anyway. I'd rather be dead than be in it.

There are some highlights to the film. Ripley's hair in the beginning of the movie is AWESOME. The dropship flight scene is cool and i supppose the final fight between Ripley and the Alien Queen was pretty exciting.. maybe a little bit??

Bizzarely though, the best bit for me is only available on the Extended Edition. The automated sentry guns are wicked. god knows why they were taken out of the cinema release.

Oh well. 8/10 (for the Extended Edition) 7/10 for the cinema release.

Film 4 - Requiem for a Dream. No.61 in the list

Now don't get me wrong. I wasn't looking forward to seeing this film.
To be honest the first time i found out about this film was when i saw it listed No.61 in the IMDB list. Then stupidly on my part, I thought i might read some reviews. Here are some quotes.

"As I sat watching the credits roll, I began crying, but I'm still not sure why."

"The ending was truly the most frightening thing I have ever seen in film- forget the cheap scares of The Exorcist, Psycho and the endless bile of the 'slasher flick', this stuff is REAL."

"Like being repeatedly punched in the back of the head by Mike Tyson."

I hate horror films. I hate crying. I hate being repeatedly punched in the back of the head by convicted rapist boxers. So there.

Some nice Digby Chicken Caesar moments and plenty of nakedness!! woop woop!
And some of the most vile, obscene and heart wrenching cinema i've ever (not) had the pleasure of seeing. To be brutally honest I don't really know what else to say.

Towards the end I was beginning to feel very uncomfortable looking at the screen, and nearly turned the rotten thing off. But I have a resolution to maintain so struggled to the end.

4/10

no really. 4/10 :(

can i have my 90 mins back please? I promise never to take drugs. ever.

Film 3 - Inglourious Basterds No.68 in the IMDB chart

Hmmm. Tarantino. Excited?? You shouldn't be.

Music, violence and very dark humour. It's not quite 'Allo'Allo!... or so you'd think.
In fact it's worse!

The film starts very strongly, and slowly (and I mean SLOWLY), and gets weaker and weaker.
It seems to be completely full of subtitles, apart from when you get to hear Brad Pitt speak. Which unfortunately involves listening to him drawl some crap American hill-billy accent. It's shite. So is he.

The highlight for me, is one scene very reminiscent of The Life of Brian. You know, the scene where the roman soldiers leave Brian's Mums apartment. Except in this film the Nazis leave a murder scene. It wasn't supposed to be funny. But still i laughed.

It sadly reminded me of the fact that only one Monty Python film is in the top 100. And it isn't Brian. :-(

Anyway the ending of Inglorious Basterds is probably the best bit. I won't say anymore in case i ruin it for anyone stupid enough to want to watch it. But truly, it does rock. I didn't laugh, but i probably smiled.

How this got to No. 68 in the list is beyond me.

6/10 (at a push)

Film Two - The Matrix

I'm having a few problems with how to handle this whole resolution thing already.
Should I watch the movies in order? And if so should I watch from the top or bottom of the list?
I could start from the top but then risk becoming bored.
Or I could start from the bottom and enjoy the whole thing as the movies get better and better.
Anyway I've opted for the sensible approach. Basically i'll start by watching what i already own, and then work my way through acquiring the others.
All 88 of them. Believe or not we only had 12 to start with.

Anyway, on with the utterly pointless review...

So, what's not to like? For me it would be The Agents. How bloody tedious can any character be? They look dull, act dull, show no emotion and generally just bore the tits off me. The problem is I think they are supposed to be that way.

But then you have the story. There are no slow points with no interest, the rest is just full on action. With original action sequences to boot. When the film originally came out, 'Bullet Time' was a whole new filming style. It was so original the film makers used it as an advert for the film. I remember watching short documentaries about it on the telly.

Anyway i digress. You aren't expecting a Jonathon Woss review. If you did you're looking at the wrong webshite.

anyway. enjoy. 9/10

Film One - The Usual Supects

Wow! what a film! Full of twists and turns with unexpected results. With outstanding performances from Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Pete Postlethwaite, Benecio Del Toro and Stephen Baldwin, this is a film not to be missed. Although I did find Pete Postlethwaite's and Benecio Del Toro's accents bloody annoying. Benecio's slurring words and phrases were simply not understandable. And Pete "Obadiah" Postlethwaite will never be able to convince me he's a Pakistani... No matter how much he blacks up.

Otherwise it's still a great film. The ending is superb and there are plenty of laugh out loud moments. I can't say too much, I dont want to ruin it for anyone!
